Councils rake in £1.2m a day in parking fines

By Daniel Jones CONSUMER AFFAIRS EDITOR

TOWN HALL coffers have been boosted by a near-record haul of parking fines which almost doubled in the past year.

Figures from councils in England show they pulled in £445million in fines – about £1.2million every day.

Last week, the MoS revealed that motorists face even bigger parking charges, with councils typically putting up costs by ten per cent. The ten local authorities that raked in the most money were all in London – Lambeth topped at £30.1million – and Brighton and Hove seized the most outside of the capital.

Jack Cousens, of the AA, said: ‘Many councils are so cardependent for cash that it would leave big holes in their budgets if it wasn’t for fines.’

A spokesman for the Local Government Association said: ‘Any surplus is spent on essential transport projects, including the £11billion road-repairs backlog.’
