Charge of the fright brigade

Major General Charles Collins seems disappointed that the British military currently lacks the resources to engage in ‘messy, grinding land warfare’. If this prospect was featured in recruitment advertising, I doubt young people would join up. I find this phrase obscene. It suggests the feeding of human beings into bloody, certain-death. This country needs to defend itself but this doesn’t include a modern-day charge of the Light Brigade. By disbanding this over-manned, over-funded and pretty much unseen ‘police’ force, he could save £180million annually. Peter Laidler, Abingdon
