Golf always able to balls it up

THE golf world rejoices. Having dabbled in geo-politics and civil war for the past year, it has finally returned to the place with which it is more familiar and loves best — a good old-fashioned row about equipment.

For the first time since LIV came to the neighbourhood, the sport’s temperature feels somewhere closer to normal again, and all it required were eminently sensible plans to roll back the ball in a way that might just keep it in the field when hit by a long driver.

A similar thing happened when javelins started flying too far in the Eighties. The risk was one might go into the crowd. They shifted the centre of gravity in the spear, no one got impaled and the sport survived. Golf’s situation isn’t so pressing, but the beauty is they can make it feel that way regardless.
