At least 23 killed as tornado hits Mississippi

A TORNADO left a 100-mile trail of destruction across the US state of Mississippi and at least 23 dead.

President Joe Biden yesterday described the scenes as ‘heart-breaking’ amid warnings the death toll could rise in a string of rural towns. Twelve of those who died were from the small town of Rolling Fork where police officer Jeremy McCoy said: ‘I’ve never seen anything like that.

‘You hope to hear somebody call, a baby crying, a dog barking or something, but hear nothing.’

Hailstones the size of golf balls were reported in thunderstorms on Friday night when the tornado struck.

The town of Silver City, population 200, was also obliterated with emergency worker Royce Steed saying: ‘It is more or less wiped off the map.’
