RISHI SUNAK has personally congratulated ‘phenomenal’ England captain Harry Kane on becoming the country’s all-time top scorer.

The 29-year-old striker received a phone call from the Prime Minister yesterday after he scored his recordbreaking 54th goal in the team’s opening Euro 2024 qualifier match against Italy on Thursday night.

Speaking from Chequers, Mr Sunak offered the Tottenham star ‘massive congratulations… for what you have achieved personally, that you are the all-time great’.

He told Kane he was a ‘phenomenal captain, a phenomenal role model’, adding: ‘The entire country is very proud of you and lucky to have you.’

Kane said the achievement ‘has not truly sunk in yet... but it was a special night. I love playing for my country so much. I want to represent it in the best way.’

He will be hoping to add to his tally when England take on Ukraine at Wembley today, at 5pm.

Among the crowd will be 1,000 Ukrainian refugees and their sponsor families who have been given free tickets by the Football Association and Wembley Stadium.

Petro Rewko, from the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain, said: ‘We have been overwhelmed by the kindness and compassion that has allowed Ukrainians to flee Russia’s brutal war and find a safe haven in Great Britain to start to rebuild their lives.

‘They will, of course, be cheering Ukraine, but they will also be celebrating the England team and their supporters for reaching out a hand of true friendship.’
