ALEXANDRA SHULMAN’S VERDICT

EVEN the rather downbeat environs of the Deer Valley

Utah courtroom are a handy opportunity for Gwyneth Paltrow to monetise.

All week we’ve been fascinated by the power coats, the white knitwear, the chain necklaces… much of which is available on her Goop lifestyle site.

But don’t forget there’s eyewear, too. On day one of her testifying over a 2016 ski crash, Gwyneth arrived in the standardissue aviator shades that no Hollywood star, male or female, would be without. But once inside, she was savvy enough to realise dark glasses would score her nil points for authenticity and look as if she was not taking the proceedings seriously. So out came a pair of clear-lensed gold rims which give her more of a ‘middle-aged mom who needs reading specs’ air.

And then on Friday, there was a mysteriously brief appearance of a pair of a tortoiseshell frames, similar to the Miklos pair available to buy on the

Goop website for $95.

The randomness of Gwynnie’s spec-wearing means it’s hard to know whether she’s short- or long-sighted. Or whether it’s all just a matter of style.

But no matter. Glasses, it should be remembered, are one of the most effective props in advocacy – frequently whipped on and off and waved around by barristers in the service of making a strong point.

She may be a film star, not a legal whizz, but she’s canny enough to know there’s money in them thar lenses.
