FIVE SHOOTING STARS

1 ‘BURGUNDINE’

Making its debut in 2015, this boasts reddish purple shoots, above, with a low fibre content, making them so tender they can be eaten raw.

2 ‘GUELPH ECLIPSE’

A very vigorous variety that will provide bumper crops of bright green, thick-stemmed, tight-tipped shoots between April and May.

3 ‘GUELPH MILLENNIUM’

This robust variety was bred in Canada and is perfect for cool climates, producing purple-tipped green spears between April and June.

4 ‘MONDEO’

Admired for its large yields, its tasty green spears with purple tips are ready for harvesting in late spring.

5 ‘PACIFIC PURPLE’

Developed in New Zealand, its thick, bright purple spears are produced between May and early June, and are super-sweet once cooked.
