Coe’s bold move sets him apart

THERE are some woeful leaders in sport who lack the guts for a fight. Look at Thomas Bach and his pandering in all areas of Olympic business and his fondness for oppressive states.

Look then to FIFA’s Gianni Infantino, who has bloated the World Cup and creates fresh embarrassment each time his foot leaves his mouth long enough for some nonsense to creep out. UEFA’S Aleksander Ceferin, for his part, wants to rethink rules that prevent clubs in related ownership from playing in the same competition. No risks to integrity there.

With all those rogues in mind, it was interesting to see Sebastian Coe and World Athletics ban transgender women from competing in international events against biological females.

A lot of folk won’t like that. As such it is a brave move to protect the female category. Coe is not perfect but he has a huge amount on some of his peers.
