Hamilton is photobombed
MERCEDES spend months developing a new floor as part of a multi-million-pound upgrade — and then a crane operator reveals their handiwork to their rivals, writes Jonathan McEvoy.
This was after Lewis Hamilton crashed at Mirabeau in practice. The seven-time world champion trudged back to the garage while his car was hoisted high into the air, allowing the underbelly to be photographed.
Speaking later, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff said: ‘Whoever performed the crane has probably worked for Cirque du Soleil!
‘I mean, honestly, I don’t even comprehend. The car was on the road and you could have put it on a truck rather than showcasing it to the world. That was suboptimal for us.’
The effectiveness of the upgrade remains unproven. Given Mercedes’ recent problems, it may yet be that competitors will pin the picture on the wall as a warning of how not to do it…
