PEER’S KEY CEREMONIAL ROLE

JAMES Hubert Ramsay was born into one of Scotland’s oldest aristocratic families and took on the title of 17th Earl of Dalhousie from his father at the age of 51.

Along with his title, he inherited the family seat, Brechin Castle, set in 40 acres of Angus gardens and parkland, which has been handed down the family line for generations.

The laird also owns the substantial Dalhousie Estates, which stretch deep into the Angus Glens.

His heir is his youngest child and only son, Lord Simon Ramsay, a former Army Officer and Page of Honour to the Queen.

The family, whose family motto is Semper Paratus – or always prepared – has a close relationship with the Royal Family.

The Earl was appointed Lord Steward of Her Majesty’s Household in 2009, making him one of the Royal Household’s most important aides.

The position was once linked to the Cabinet, but is now appointed by the Sovereign.

While his predecessors were responsible for the management and financial affairs of the royal household, his role is now more ceremonial. He attended the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding as part of their entourage of family and friends.
