PICK OF THE DAY Guilt

BBC2, 9pm

Any sequel faces the challenge of holding onto the successful qualities of the original while avoiding a predictable reprise. Happily, writer Neil Forsyth has come up with an entertaining, twisty story in which disgraced lawyer Max (Mark Bonnar, right with Sara Vickers) is again in trouble.

Having been forced to leave his former high-flying existence for a two-year stretch behind bars, Max is released to an unwelcoming Edinburgh and finds himself forced to work for the well intentioned but slow-witted private detective Kenny (Emun Elliott). But it’s not long before bodies are dropping and a large, and very tempting, bag of cash pops up.

Love of money is certainly the root of all evil in the immoral universe of Guilt. Whatever punishment is coming the way of the wicked, Forsyth’s dark, often funny story is an irresistible treat for viewers. ★★★★★
