Coroebus’ chance in Guineas higher than Native Trail’s, insists Appleby

By Marcus Townend

CHARLIE APPLEBY landed the Dewhurst Stakes with Native Trail at Newmarket, but the Godolphin trainer reckons Coroebus, who won the Autumn Stakes 35 minutes earlier, might be an even better bet for next year’s 2,000 Guineas.

Unbeaten Native Trail is 3-1 favourite for the 2022 2,000 Guineas after a strong finish under William Buick saw him beat Dubawi Legend by two lengths.

Coroebus, who smoothly beat Imperial Fighter two lengths with Buick once again on board, is 5-1 second favourite for the next year’s Guineas.

Appleby said: ‘We have seen two nice colts. You cannot fault what Native Trail has done and William and I probably differ but I do like Coroebus.

‘As three-year-olds, when the pace of the race is getting quicker in these Classics, the one thing you have to do is travel and that is what Coroebus does. He’s electric and has been since May when he was one of our fastest two-year-olds.’

Buick left Newmarket with three wins having also won the Dubai Nursery race on Charlie Hillstrained Point Lynas.

But, crucially, his mount Burning Victory lost out by a length and a half to Oisin Murphy-ridden Buzz in the Cesarewitch Handicap.

Murphy leads Buick by seven wins in the Flat Jockeys championship which does end at Ascot’s Champions Day next Saturday.
