When Inspector Rebus was just a young PC...

CRIME writing king Ian Rankin may write an Inspector Rebus prequel, revealing more about his most famous character’s early career.

He tells The Big Scottish Book Club, on BBC Scotland at 10pm tonight: ‘There’s a lot about early Rebus we still don’t know about.’

Rankin, 61, said he has been inspired after recently completing the late William McIlvanney’s final unfinished Laidlaw novel, a prequel set in 1970s Glasgow. ‘It’s given me the confidence that if I did want to go that route, I could do it. Not the next book, but maybe in a couple of books’ time,’ he added.

Curmudgeonly Edinburgh detective John Rebus first appeared in Rankin’s 1987 book Knots and Crosses, and has since featured in 24 of his novels.
