New Army cash hits the target

SIGNIFICANT defence news announced for Scotland this week.

As part of a reshaping of the Army, the infantry battalion 1 Scots will be re-roled as part of the new Ranger Regiment of special ops soldiers, Glencorse barracks in Midlothian is to be saved from closure, extra troops will be stationed at Kinloss, Moray, and the Black Watch will return to its home recruiting area to be based out of Leuchars, Fife. The changes will see more than £350 million invested in the defence estate in Scotland.

Being a professional soldier is a tough job and extended periods away make it tougher still. Having more Scots soldiers training and living closer to home will help with family cohesion too. A good development.
