Winter Walks

BBC4, 7.30pm, Monday to Thursday

‘A bit of headspace is good for everyone, I think,' declares Amanda Owen (right) as she sets off on her walk in the delightful opening episode of this four-part series showing over consecutive nights.

‘The Yorkshire Shepherdess' is a great choice as a companion for the viewer in this opener. Her thoughtful ruminations on the landscape around her speak of her genuine love for the land. Her winding route starts in the village of Bainbridge and eventually ends at the lake of Semerwater.

Along the way, Owen touches on the legacy left by the Romans from two millennia ago, and there's a friendly encounter with riders on native-bred horses making their way unshod through the stones. But mostly Owen is on her own – no doubt a welcome break from her husband and nine children – enjoying the solitude and breathtaking vistas. ★★★★★
