Will-Of-The-Dump Radio 4, 4pm

Hats off to Will Self (right) for making the most unlikely tale interesting.

In this one-off documentary, the writer charts the progress of a black bin bag full of trash, following it from his home to its final destination. What unravels is the story of a modern-day dump where, instead of being buried, the rubbish will go up in smoke.

In The River Man (Radio 4, 8pm) Fergal Keane investigates the fate of retired Royal Irish Constabulary sergeant James Kane, who was executed by the IRA 100 years ago.

The Rheingans Sisters compose a contemporary song in Shaking Up The Shanty (Radio 4, 11.30am).
