Phil Lynott: Songs For While I’m Away

BBC2, 10pm

For one night only, the boys are back in town – BBC2's latest music-themed Saturday evening is devoted to Thin Lizzy.

At 11.30pm there's a chance to see the band play one of their final gigs featuring frontman Phil Lynott (right) in Sight & Sound In Concert: Thin Lizzy, which is followed by The Irish Rock Story: A Tale Of Two Cities (12.05am).

But preceding those is easily the highlight of the night, a feature-length profile of Lynott himself, revealing how a mixed-race boy from working-class Dublin became one of Ireland's, if not the world's, greatest rock stars in the 1970s.

There are insights from those who knew him, not just as a performer, but as a father, husband, son and friend.

Oddly, however, there's little mention of the excesses that led to his death in 1986 at the age of only 36. ★★★★☆
