Double European joy for Scottish curlers

Gold for men and women

SCOTLAND made history last night after securing double gold at the European Championships, beating Sweden in both the men’s and women’s finals.

Eve Muirhead’s rink triumphed 7-4 over the Swedes earlier in the day before Bruce Mouat’s group followed up the ladies’ success, defeating the reigning champions 8-5 later on.

The result made it a perfect tournament for the men’s rink after they won all their matches on the way to sealing gold.

This competition would have been an especially sweet victory for Muirhead, though, as it was her third gold following success in 2007 and 2011.

She said: ‘European champions again… that sounds amazing.

‘It’s funny to think that a wee while back I never thought I would be top of the podium again after my hip surgery and having been through a tough few months, but here we are.’
