HATELEY HOPING DUTCH COACHING DUO CAN UNRAVEL ENIGMA THAT IS STRIKER MORELOS

FRASER MACKIE

MARK HATELEY hopes Giovanni van Bronckhorst and striker coach Roy Makaay can reap the rewards from a revitalised Alfredo Morelos.

But the Ibrox great admits it’s pure guesswork to assess what impact the moody Colombian can make under a new regime.

Morelos scored the eighth and ninth goals of an erratic season as Rangers beat Sparta Prague to reach the Europa League knockout phase.

Hateley said: ‘Where is Alfredo in his Rangers career? You better ask him that!

‘Who knows? But he took his chances against Sparta Prague. The first goal was very good and that set him up for his performance.

‘To get one inside 15 minutes is perfect for any striker as you’re on your way.

‘That’s how it worked out for Alfredo. His start to the game allowed him to build.

‘He did the right things, got his goals and the advice I would give to him is keep focusing on that.

‘One of Giovanni’s biggest tasks is to get Alfredo back to his best. He’s one of those players who has to be kept under a tight rein.

‘But it’s up to the Rangers staff to do that. Can Roy Makaay do it? Good luck to Roy!’

Hateley, speaking at a signing session for his book Hitting The Mark, insists failing to match the heights of previous campaigns has left Morelos wide open to scrutiny.

He explained: ‘Alfredo has brought the criticism on himself because of the standards he set. He’s raised the bar so high and everyone expects him to follow that.

‘As a professional, you’re actually expected to hit that bar again — and then go over.

‘The fans have seen how good he can be and they expect Alfredo to go again.’

Hitting The Mark by Mark Hateley with Alistair Aird is published by Reach Sport.
