Price of f ish suppers to rise due to plastic packaging ban

By Cameron Charters

THE price of a fish supper looks set to rise because of a crackdown on plastic packaging.

From June 1, the polystyrene containers commonly used as chip boxes will be banned as part of a Scottish Government drive to reduce single-use plastics. However, shop owners have warned the move could drive up prices.

Andrew Cook, president of the National Federation of Fish Friers, said some fish and chip shops already struggle with the rising cost of cooking oil and potatoes. The new rule could see owners who break it fined £5,000.

Mr Cook said: ‘As an industry we have always supported anything that is better for the environment, as long as the timing is right. With the cost of everything so high, it is just an extra burden on businesses at the wrong time.’

Mr Cook said other options can be at least five times as expensive as the 2p polystyrene packages. He said the move could add 15p-20p to the cost of a takeaway. He added: ‘If you have to go back to wrapping in paper then there are obesity problems because there are no portion controls, as with cartons.’

Martin Kersh, executive director at the Foodservice Packaging Association and vice-chairman of the British Takeaway Campaign, said: ‘There are such a large number of takeaways where it is a family business living hand to mouth. They are already struggling.’

Conservative MSP for North East Scotland, Maurice Golden, said it was vital to reduce waste, but added: ‘At a time when there is a cost of living crisis, it is also important that any increased costs are not being passed on to members of the public.’

A Scottish Government spokesman said: ‘This ban will encourage businesses to make the switch to reusable alternatives, helping to reduce litter and cut emissions.’
