Polo team miss star treatment

IF POLO is the ‘Sport of Kings’ why aren’t all women who play for England treated like royalty?

I only ask because when the allwoman team – with star player Millie Hughes – went to Argentina for the world cup, polo’s governing body wouldn’t pay for flights or accommodation while the team was out there – but did give them a pair of white breeches and a gilet each.

The team won bronze in their competition, so surely such a great British success story deserved better?

When I met Millie, 20, who is preparing for London’s Polo In The Park event next month, she said: ‘It’s a very male-dominated sport.’

Governing body, the Hurlingham Polo Association, tells me: ‘For the Women’s World Champs in Argentina we paid all entry fees, supplied kit and all horses were paid for while they were there. We did not cover accommodation or flights.’

Millie is channelling her concerns into her university dissertation… on diversity and sexism in women’s sport. How fitting!
