ELVIS RAKUTEN FILM
Get ready to be all shook up – Baz Luhrmann’s lavish Elvis Presley biopic was released in cinemas only in June, and it’s already making its way into our homes. The largely unknown Austin Butler (right) doesn’t look much like the King but he captures his spirit perfectly. Tom Hanks stars as Presley’s notorious manager, Colonel Tom Parker. Available now
ECHOES NETFLIX DRAMA
New seven-episode mystery from the makers of 13 Reasons Why. Echoes is a psychological drama about two identical twins, Leni and Gina (Michelle Monaghan), who have secretly swapped lives since they were young. As adults they share two homes, two husbands and a child, but their perfectly choreographed world is turned upside down when one of them goes missing, leaving the other to deal with the fallout. From Friday
TRAINWRECK: WOODSTOCK ’99
NETFLIX DOCUMENTARY
Three-part documentary about a music festival featuring the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Limp Bizkit, among others, that descended into violence and chaos. It became a terrifying, nightmarish Lord Of The Flies. At the end, three people were dead, there had been a number of rapes and sexual assaults and an area of upstate New York looked like a war zone. This features rare insider footage and eyewitness interviews. Disturbing but utterly gripping. Available now
LODGE 49
BT TV/AMC DRAMA
Dud (Wyatt Russell) is an exsurfer who has lost his way after the death of his father. Fate pushes him towards a strange fraternal order – a bit like the Masons – that espouses an alchemical philosophy, while its oddball members spend a lot of their time drinking cheap beer in the titular lodge. Dud’s instinct tells him that joining up will be a life-changing event for him and will help him repay his twin sister money he owes her. This is an eccentric, slow-burning comedy drama quite unlike anything else around. Co-stars Kenneth Welsh and Brent Jennings
(right). Available now
YELLOWSTONE PARAMOUNT+ DRAMA
Thrilling contemporary western in which the Dutton family, led by patriarch John Dutton (Kevin Costner), try to protect their huge Montana ranch from politicians, land developers and criminals. This is the jewel in the Paramount+ crown and a huge hit in the US, though so far it has attracted little attention here. Series four begins explosively in the immediate aftermath of the various assassination attempts that ended series three. Yellowstone has already spawned one prequel series, 1883.
From Wednesday
THE PRINCESS
SKY/NOW DOCUMENTARY
Don’t we already know enough about Princess Diana’s life? Maybe, but here’s a documentary that takes a different approach, using only carefully assembled audio and video footage from the time rather than contemporary interviews and voiceover. It gives the film a feeling of immediacy. By the time we have reached the scenes that unfolded after her tragic death, it becomes something quite powerful.
From Sunday
MEMENTO NETFLIX FILM
The stunning neo-noir thriller that announced director Christopher Nolan as a brilliant new talent. Guy Pearce plays Leonard Shelby, a man unable to create new longterm memories, who is searching for the people who killed his wife. Some scenes are presented in reverse chronological order so that the audience shares the bewilderment that Shelby feels due to ongoing amnesia. Sounds complicated, but it’s actually ingenious. From Sunday

Banner, turns her into a slightly less green and angry version of the Hulk. Jameela Jamil (right) also stars. From Wednesday
THE DISAPPEARANCE OF GABBY PETITO

She had been strangled and the FBI declared that Laundrie was a ‘person of interest’. The case gripped America, attracting a huge amount of publicity. This features interviews with Gabby’s parents. From Thursday

AMAZON FREEVEE
COMEDY
Gregory Thomas Garcia, whose previous projects include My Name Is Earl and Raising Hope, is also the brain behind this promising new sitcom. It follows a group of ex-cons who decide to use their criminal expertise to help rather than hinder people. Phillip Garcia, Martha Plimpton and Garret Dillahunt star. From Friday
MARYLAND iPLAYER DRAMA
Adaptation of Lucy Kirkwood’s play about two women called
Mary (Hayley Squires, above, and Zawe Ashton) who meet by chance at a police station after being sexually assaulted. Daniel Mays plays one of the investigating officers, while a chorus of furies highlights the injustices of the women’s plight. Available now
THE REAL MO FARAH iPLAYER DOCUMENTARY
Brace yourself for an incredibly moving documentary about national treasure Sir Mo Farah. He opens up about his extremely difficult childhood, including the traumas he faced after arriving alone in the UK from Somaliland as a very young boy, and his subsequent road to Olympic glory. Available now
VERY BEST OF PETER SELLERS TPTV ENCORE COMEDY
A collection put together in 1990 of sketches, vignettes and, of course, classic Clouseau moments (below). Some are famous: a seated Sellers leans back to admire a girl diving into a pool and falls in. Others, such as a go-karting Sellers hotly pursued by a dog, or a discodancing Sellers whacked in the face by a dancer’s arm, are not. But all attest to the tragic former Goon’s gift for comic invention. From Sunday THE BAIN FAMILY MURDERS
ALL4 DRAMA
Gripping, disturbing, true-crime drama from New Zealand about the Bain family (right), who were shot at home in 1994. It explores the aftermath, which led to one of the nation’s most notorious miscarriages of justice. Available now
LADY BOSS: THE JACKIE COLLINS STORY iPLAYER DOCUMENTARY
Nominated for a coveted Grierson Award, this profile of the bestselling, mould-breaking novelist (below) features footage found by her daughters after her death in 2015. They’re among the friends and family recalling the woman who refused to live in her elder sister Joan’s shadow. Available now
MICHAEL PALIN: TRAVELS OF A LIFETIME iPLAYER DOCUMENTARY
Another chance to see the wonderful documentary in which the nicest man on telly – and former key member of the Monty Python team – discusses how he became the new Alan Whicker in the 1980s and 1990s, while looking back on five of his classic travelogues: Around The World In 80 Days, Pole To Pole, Full Circle, Sahara and Himalaya. Available now
WITNESS NUMBER 3
MY5 DRAMA
Channel 5 ended Neighbours partly in order to put more money into its own dramas, and after a few duds – Intruder – it’s paying off, as this far outshone the BBC thriller (The Control Room) in the same week. Nina Toussaint-White is a single mum who witnesses something that could bring down a local gangster. Her decision to testify in court is put in jeopardy by a chilling campaign of intimidation and increasingly violent threats. Toussaint-White holds it all together superbly, and a tense turning-point scene with a would-be killer (Ruaridh Mollica) is terrific. Available now
THE NEWSREADER iPLAYER DRAMA
Set in a Melbourne TV newsroom in 1986, The Newsreader starts out looking like the 1987 comedy Broadcast News, with its main characters a diva-ish female news anchor (Anna Torv), a hapless wannabe (Sam Reid) and a splenetic chief who is sexist even by Aussie standards. But it turns into something more complex and engaging thanks to fine performances and the use of real stories from the era – AIDS, Chernobyl, the dingo baby case – to move the lively story along.
