5 things we learned this week

By Jon Connell of daily online newsletter

1 London gets less rain than Rome, Venice or Nice. Bees can tell when a shower is coming, so work longer hours the day before. Burmese monkeys sneeze uncontrollably in a downpour.

2 Earth has 20 quadrillion ants. They weigh more than all the birds and animals put together. That’s the same as a fifth of the world’s humans.

3 Indian billionaire Gautam Adani has surpassed Amazon founder Jeff Bezos to become the world’s secondrichest person (after Elon Musk). Adani has a fortune of $146.8billion thanks to interests in ports, airports and coal.

4 Religious people tend to be more satisfied with their sex lives than atheists, according to a study. The pious have fewer romps than average, especially outside marriage, but have more realistic expectations of sex.

5 A secret to Taylor Swift’s success in songwriting is her choice of pens. She has a quill for ‘antiquated’ phrasings inspired by Charlotte Brontë, a fountain pen for tracks with a ‘poetic twist’ and a glitter gel pen for ‘frivolous, carefree, bouncy’ lines that ‘don’t take themselves too seriously’.
