By Graham Swann

SCOTLAND 4-2-3-1

CRAIG GORDON 6

Huge save to deny Parrott as Irish broke to try to make it 2-1. Nearly gifted goal with stray pass to Ogbene.

AARON HICKEY 6

Handed a start after Nathan Patterson’s injury but lasted only 58 minutes after suffering a knock.

JACK HENDRY 7

Tremendous header to make it 1-1 for his first competitive Scotland goal. Made some crucial blocks.

SCOTT McKENNA 6

Forced to haul down the lively Ogbene in second half and received booking. Needed to be alert to Irish frontline.

KIERAN TIERNEY 6

Left-back’s night came to a premature end with a head knock before the break. Looked unhappy to be subbed.

SCOTT McTOMINAY 6

Denied second-half goal by Doherty’s vital clearance. Pressured Browne into conceding penalty.

CALLUM McGREGOR 6

The Celtic captain upped the tempo in the second half as Scots seeked response. Saw a shot deflected behind.

STUART ARMSTRONG 5

Delivered a couple of crosses in first half but to no avail. Looked off the pace at times compared to Wednesday.

JOHN McGINN 6

Earning his 50th cap, he scuffed a couple of first-half chances. Didn’t shy away from making presence felt.

RYAN CHRISTIE 7

Talk about tale of two halves. Rushed things initially but improved display after the break. Converted cool penalty.

LYNDON DYKES 6

Started ahead of Che Adams but looked isolated at times as Scotland lumped ball forward before they settled.

SUBSTITUTES

Taylor (Tierney 42); Hickey (Ralston 59); Fraser (Armstrong 59); McLean (Christie 85), Adams (Dykes 85).

STEVE CLARKE

Far from his team’s best display but will be heartened by their spirit to turn the game around in second half. Referee: Sandro Schärer (Swi). REP OF IRE 3-5-2

GAVIN BAZUNU 6

A spectator until he had to pick the ball out of the net after Hendry’s goal. Tipped Fraser’s shot over bar.

NATHAN COLLINS 6

Some crucial blocks as defender dealt with what was initially a tame threat from Clarke’s men.

JOHN EGAN 7

The Irish captain capitalised to make it 1-0 after Scots failed to deal with a corner. Some vital interceptions.

DARA O’SHEA 6

Playing on the left of back three, West Brom defender had to be on his toes as Scots lifted their intensity.

MATT DOHERTY 6

The Tottenham full-back wasted a glorious chance to restore his team’s lead for 2-1 when he blazed over.

JASON KNIGHT 5

Derby County midfielder contributed to some of the niggle between the teams. Booked late on.

JOSH CULLEN 5

Booked for kicking the ball away, then could have been sent off for tackle on McGinn just before half-time.

JAYSON MOLUMBY 6

The West Brom midfielder needed to be alert in battle but was eventually subbed in second half.

JAMES McCLEAN 6

Experienced Irish midfielder made some early breaks on the left side but fell out of the game as it wore on.

TROY PARROTT 6

Denied early goal by offside flag. Wasted a golden chance on the breakaway as Gordon saved.

MICHAEL OBAFEMI 6

Possesses pace to terrify defences as Scots know all too well. But substituted on the hour mark.

Obafemi (Ogbene 60); Coleman (Doherty 76); Robinson (Parrott 76);

Browne (Molumby 76); Brady (McClean 83).
