Our nurses deserve a better deal

I am normally a fan of what Peter Hitchens has to say – he often talks a lot of common sense.

However, I have to take exception to his comment in last week’s Mail on Sunday about whether nurses should go on strike.

He may not agree that nurses should be able to withdraw their labour by strike action. But at the same time he acknowledges they are ‘dedicated far beyond what we ask of normal paid workers. And such goodness is always exploited’.

Unfortunately, he then writes: ‘If that doesn’t suit you, my advice is not to be a nurse.’

I hope that he will not have to call upon the unselfish services of the National Health Service’s nurses, as he may not see too much sympathy coming his way from those who think he should shut up and put up.

Thanks to understaffing, these nurses must work day and night on shifts that can last longer than 12 hours with no time for proper breaks.

As a result of all of this, they often have to deal with life-and-death situations while feeling totally exhausted.
