WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE...

... between perineum and peritoneum?

THESE anatomical words may sound similar, but they have very different meanings.

The perineum is the name for the small area of the body between the genitals and the back passage.

In women, it is a common site for injuries during childbirth, as the skin and underlying muscle tissue is vulnerable to tearing.

The peritoneum, however, is a membrane that is found inside the body. It is a two layered sheet of smooth tissue that surrounds the abdomen, wrapping around the liver, stomach, spleen and parts of the large and small intestines.

Its job is to protect and insulate the major organs.

The peritoneum also releases lubricating fluid that reduces friction when the organs rub against each other.
