Smith curbs enthusiasm as Glasgow stretch run

By Simon Roberts

FRANCO SMITH refused to get carried away as his Glasgow side stretched their unbeaten record to nine games in the URC.

The Glasgow coach saw his side record a bonuspoint win, scoring six tries with fly-half Duncan Weir claiming a try and kicking 15 points with the boot.

Hooker Fraser Brown, wings Cole Forbes and Sebastien Cancelliere, and centre Stafford McDowall also crossed the try line. And Smith confirmed all of his Scotland stars released for this trip to Wales came through the game unscathed ahead of next weekend’s Six Nations opener against England.

‘It was a good win and we scored some nice tries,’ said Smith. ‘We had some disallowed and that did stop our momentum a bit and it could have changed the scoreline if we had scored some of those.

‘We are very grateful for the result and none of them are hurt.

‘We don’t want to look back and we will just keep focused on the next challenge and we have to manage the games ahead of us. I am just happy that the whole squad has stepped up so far this season. Good squads make great teams and everybody has contributed.’

Glasgow had recorded a bonus point for scoring four tries before half-time despite their hosts coming back to level the score at 14-all midway through the first half. Smith would have enjoyed his return to the city in which he played and the professional job his men produced.

The South African’s first season in charge has seen him produce a well-organised and well-coached side and the Dragons really had no answer to the questions the visitors posed.

McDowall, who was released from Scotland’s Six Nations squad for this match, impressed but it was fellow internationals Weir and Ali Price who pulled the strings.

Chris Coleman grabbed a late Dragons bonus after tries from Rhodri Williams, Sio Tomkinson and Taine Basham, but they stay rooted to the wrong end of the table and coach Dai Flanagan would have been disappointed with his side’s display.

He was without his Wales internationals and

Dragons talisman Ross Moriarty, who was sidelined with concussion, but the Welsh side never really got going.

SCORERS; Dragons — Tries: Williams, Tomkinson, Basham, Coleman. Cons:

Hanrahan 4.

Glasgow — Tries: Forbes, Brown 2, Weir, McDowall, Cancilliere. Cons: Weir 5, Jordan.
