Protest at ‘highway robbery’

A RALLY was held in Glasgow yesterday to protest about £60 Low Emission Zone (LEZ) fines being brought in for drivers of older cars entering the city centre.

The 50 or so protesters, stating a wish for ‘free movement’ in the city, marched from the West End to Buchanan Galleries, which lies within the new LEZ due to be enforced from Thursday. One woman, who gave her name as Morag and was dressed as legendary English highwayman Dick Turpin, said: ‘I and many people here today feel this scheme is little more than highway robbery, hence my outfit today.

‘We feel that it is unfair and unnecessary and that the council should actually listen to the people it is supposed to serve, and who do not want this restriction on the way they go about their business.’

Another marcher, David Close, said: ‘The council are killing the city centre with this.

‘Given that it is a scientific fact that the air quality in the city is fine, we feel the LEZ is little more than a money-making scheme targeting motorists and forcing people out of the area.’
