Army rations, Italian lessons and a VERY well-secured bed, how I’ll beat the record for surviving two months

By Kirsten Johnson

IT IS Britain’s loneliest outpost, notoriously remote and inhospitable. Lying 230 miles west of the Outer Hebrides, the tiny granite islet cannot even be reached by helicopter.

Yet Rockall is now the focus of an incredible record attempt as an exsoldier tries to survive on the exposed outcrop for two months.

Chris Cameron, 53, will live on Army ration packs and camp in a pod perched on a tiny ledge just 11ft long and 4ft wide. His water will be stored in jerry cans lashed to the rock face to stop them being blown away.

The father of two from Buckie, Banffshire, will eke out his supplies using a fishing line and water butt.

As a way to fill the time, Mr Cameron hopes to teach himself French and Italian and write a book about his day-to-day experiences.

Over the past two centuries, only 110 people are known to have set foot on Rockall, which is 100ft wide and 70ft high. Just five have spent more than one night on the North Atlantic outcrop. The last person to attempt a 60-day stay was fellow Scot Nick Hancock in 2014 – but he was thwarted when his supplies were washed away in a storm.

Mr Cameron, who served with the Gordon Highlanders, hopes to raise £50,000 for military charities. For the first week, he will be joined by his backup team Adrian Styles and Emil Bergmann.

They are due to arrive today after setting sail on a yacht on Friday. Mr Cameron said: ‘I’ve everything I need in order to survive.’
