SEAGULLS IN SWOOP FOR SCHWAKE

SIMON JONES

BRIGHTON are in talks to sign Livingston’s American goalkeeper Brian Schwake.

The 21-year-old, who has spent the past season on loan at Scottish Championship side Greenock Morton, has been in Brighton this week training so that the Premier League side’s coaching staff could take a closer look at what he can do.

Schwake, though born in Mount Prospect, Illinois, qualifies for a European passport owing to his family hailing from Luxembourg.

Brighton want him in as cover for Jason Steele while they are aware that Robert Sanchez is weighing up a potential move away after being ousted as No 1.

Schwake would cost a minimum fee of around £250,000 as a cross-border compensation deal for a young player out of contract.

As befitting a player wanted by Roberto De Zerbi, Schwake has high possession statistics with a 73 per cent success rate on long passes last season.

Talks are ongoing with Brighton keen to get transfer business done early ahead of their Europa League campaign.
