Young Sammy Fabelman’s (Gabriel LaBelle) love of the movies is sparked by his first trip to the cinema but his growing passion for the medium and his attempts to make his own films are bound up with family drama. Michelle Williams gives the standout performance as Sammy’s mother Mitzi and there’s a brief but memorable cameo from Spielberg’s fellow director David Lynch as the legendary filmmaker John Ford.
