LOVE PANTS: IAN DURY AND JANE HORROCKS, RADIO 4, 2.15PM

‘DEAR Janie, I will always love you, for ever and ever, I’m sorry to say.’ When Jane Horrocks (pictured) cleared out her attic she found a stash of letters from her former lover, the punk singer Ian Dury. Ian’s handwriting was beautiful, the letters cleverly constructed and full of love. They were also full of pain and rage. Drawing on these letters and her own diaries, Jane takes us back to 1987, when the relationship began, coming to the regretful conclusion that, despite the passion and excitement, ‘life is much easier without him’.

EVERY so often, a glow of warmth from HENRY NORMAL (RADIO 4, 6.30PM) brings cheer to the radio schedules. Henry’s comedy credits include cowriting The Royle Family and producing Gavin and Stacey. For this occasional series, he draws on his home life, using poetry, stories, jokes and quotes to make audiences laugh and, without being cloying or sentimental, cry. Tonight, Henry gives a tender account of what the word home means to him.
