GREYHOUND

GRIPPING SECOND WORLD WAR THRILLER

During the Second World War, Britain was dependent on the brave crews of merchant ships, who crossed the Atlantic from the US to bring us food and fuel. They were rich pickings for the U-boats and, in this taut, lean thriller, Tom Hanks (above) plays a newly promoted officer commanding a

US Navy destroyer protecting a convoy under attack from German subs. It has some tremendous battle scenes that we sadly didn’t get to see in the cinema because of Covid, and Hanks is, of course, excellent. The only small downside is that it is all very American, and occasionally suffers from that curious mix of chest-beating and sentimentality that can occur in US war films.
