Getting back on our feet

I SUPPoRT columnist dominic Lawson’s view that we must not allow agitators to influence how we deal with the latest Covid variant.

Variants will keep appearing, so we have to accept this fact and live with it. Compulsory wearing of face masks in indoor crowded places is sensible, as is the closing of borders with the African countries affected and all adults being fully vaccinated, but another full-scale national lockdown would be disastrous.

The country is just getting back on its feet after the previous lockdowns. The retail, hospitality, airline and entertainment industries are clawing their way back and it’s doubtful if they could weather another closure.

Mental health has been adversely affected by the isolation of lockdown, not to mention the effect on patients with life-threatening diseases.

We must not succumb to demands for another lockdown.

Mrs ELIZABETH QUIN, Bournemouth. WhAT happened to ‘we need to learn to live with Covid’?

The South African expert who told the world about omicron described it as ‘more transmissible, no loss of smell and mild’, so it’s just like the common cold.

But we are back to masks and Christmas is again under threat. I guess the unelected scientists are in charge again.
