Over-74s can still get bowel test

LOTS of readers got in touch about my comments on bowel cancer screening last week – asking why the tests stop when you reach 74. It does seem like an arbitrary cut-off, but in fact it is based on evidence that shows the tests are more likely to deliver false positives in older adults. This means patients are likely to be told they have an issue when they haven’t, causing unnecessary worry and pointless, invasive tests. Having said that, anyone over 74 can request a free screening kit by calling 0800 707 60 60. Crucially, if you notice any symptoms – blood in the loo, bloating or a change in bowel habits – see your GP immediately.
