The officials got it right

DARREN ENGLAND awards a penalty after a challenge by Palace’s Chris Richards on Villa’s Ollie Watkins that is checked by VAR.

The VAR, in this instance Rob Jones, believes Darren may have made a clear and obvious error and recommends a review.

Darren goes to the screen, looks at all available images and concludes he is happy with his original decision. The final decision is always with the on-field official.

It took a few minutes for Darren to come to the decision — but there is no time limit. It was a tight call, there were lots of different angles to look at.

The critical thing is that the officials come up with the right decision.
