Removing vital lesson on racism
I was moved by Professor Edwin Conner’s article in last week’s Mail on Sunday about the removal of Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird from a Scottish school.
I read the book when it was on my school curriculum. Although many of the racial undertones may have passed me by at the age of 13, the purpose and message did not.
All children should be allowed to read this book in order to learn how racial abuse can change lives.
Sue Robinson, Warrington
To Kill A Mockingbird is patronising and condescending to those of colour and was written at a time when people, including the author, were ignorant. There is no place for such writings in today’s modern, progressive culture.
